What Is An Integrated Circuit (ICs)

Integrated Circuits (IC, ICs, Chips, Microcircuits, or Microchips) are compact electronic circuits that integrate a large number of transistors into a single chip. They were introduced in the 1960s and have since become integral to modern electronics. An integrated circuit is a general term for semiconductor products.  After the transistor was invented and mass-produced, various solid-state semiconductor components such as diodes and transistors were widely used and replaced the functions and roles of vacuum tubes in circuits. In the middle and late 20th century, the development of semiconductor manufacturing technology made integrated circuits possible. Compared with hand-assembled circuits using individual discrete electronic components, integrated circuits can integrate a large number of tiny transistors into a small chip, which is a huge improvement. The mass-manufacturability of integrated circuits, reliability, and the modular approach to circuit design ensured rapid the adoption of standardized integrated circuits instead of using discrete transistors.

Types Of Integrated Circuits (ICs)

ICs can be classified into three types: analog, digital, and mixed-signal. Analog ICs process continuous signals while digital ICs process discrete data. Mixed-signal ICs combine both continuous and discrete signals. 

Analog ICs

An analog integrated circuit mainly refers to an integrated circuit in which analog circuits composed of capacitors, resistors, transistors, etc. are integrated to process analog signals. There are many analog integrated circuits, such as operational amplifiers, analog multipliers, phase-locked loops, power management chips, etc. Analog ICs are integrated circuits that operate on continuous signals, unlike digital ICs that operate on binary signals. These signals could be voltage, current, temperature, or sound.

Digital ICs

A digital integrated circuit also called "chips," are the building blocks of modern electronics, enabling the creation of complex digital systems, such as microprocessors, memory chips, and digital signal processors.  It is a digital logic circuit or system made by integrating components and wiring on the same chip. According to the number of gates and components, digital integrated circuits can be classified into small-scale integrated circuits (SSI), medium-scale integration circuits (MSI), large-scale integration circuits (LSI), very large-scale integration circuits (VLSI), and ultra-large-scale integration circuits (ULSI). They have made possible many of the devices and technologies we now take for granted, such as medical devices, computers, electronic cars, smartphones, led lights, and drones.

Mixed-Signal ICs

Mixed-signal integrated circuits is an integrated circuit that combines analog and digital circuits. They usually contain an entire SoC. Mixed-signal ICs are often designed for specific applications or multi-purpose devices.
