History

STMicroelectronics Group (ST, STM) was formed in 1987 by the merger of two semiconductor companies, Società Generale Semiconduttori (SGS) Microelettronica in Italy and Thomson Semiconductoreurs, the semiconductor division of Thomson in France. Thomson Semiconductoreurs withdrew its shares in May 1998. Later, SGS-THOMSON changed its name to STMicroelectronics. STMicroelectronics is one the largest semiconductor supplier in the world.

CMOS Image Sensor, Digital Consumer Specific Standard Products (ASSP) such as MPEG-2/MPEG-4 encoder/decoder, Wireless ASICs, ASICs around computers (such as hard drives and printers), Standard products for automobiles, Non-volatile memory including NOR and NAND flash memory, Smart cards, Integrated Circuits, Single-chip microcomputers, Discrete Semiconductor Products, and Electronic passports.
