Super Capacitor Electrode Materials and Their Application Fields
0
In our daily lives, new types of energy are everywhere, such as nuclear energy, wind energy, solar energy, geothermal energy, tidal energy, etc. Finding energy storage and conversion devices that match these new energy sources has become a core task for current sustainable development.
Super capacitors are a new type of energy storage device that not only inherits the advantages of traditional energy storage devices but also features long cycling life and high power density compared to traditional capacitors and regular batteries. They have been widely used in various areas like new energy vehicles and portable power sources.

This article shares the current status of super capacitor materials, introduces the advantages and limitations of different electrode materials, analyzes their energy storage principles, and provides an outlook on their application prospects.

Overview of Super Capacitors

Super capacitors are a new type of energy storage device that falls between traditional capacitors and rechargeable batteries. They possess a large surface area, wide charge spacing, and high capacity. Their simple working principle and structure enable high charging and discharging rates, long cycling life, and excellent rate performance.

Due to their excellent performance and affordability, super capacitors have become a much-needed energy storage technology.

Currently, super capacitors find extensive applications in electronics, new energy vehicles, power distribution, medical devices, defense, and other fields. As environmental pollution worsens and mineral fuel costs rise, their applications in electrochemical energy storage will continue to expand.

Structure of Super Capacitors

Super capacitors generally consist of four components: positive electrode, negative electrode, electrolyte, and separator. The main materials include high-surface-area porous electrode materials, current collectors, battery separators, and electrolytes.

Working Principle of Super Capacitors

Super capacitors are a novel electrochemical energy storage device that stores and releases charges through reversible oxidation-reduction reactions on the electrodes. Their fast charge and discharge rates, coupled with high energy density, result in significant room for improvement in energy density and specific capacitance without the need for extensive charge diffusion.

Classification of Super Capacitors

Based on different energy storage principles, super capacitors can be classified into three categories: double-layer capacitors, pseudo-capacitors, and hybrid capacitors.

Double-layer capacitors

Double-layer capacitors have wide application prospects in electric vehicles, communication data, and more. Unlike redox reactions, double-layer capacitors store charges by applying voltage at the electrode-electrolyte interface. The attraction of opposite charges forms a double-layer at the electrode surface. Since charge storage is reversible, the shape and capacity remain unchanged after multiple charge-discharge cycles. The absence of physical charge transfer in the reaction process contributes to longer lifespans.

Pseudo-capacitors

Also known as Faradaic pseudocapacitors, pseudo-capacitors store charges through highly reversible oxidation-reduction reactions. The number of charge transfers is proportional to voltage during Faradaic redox processes. Common electrode materials include transition metal oxides and conductive polymers such as MnO2, RuO2, polyaniline, and polythiophene. Due to redox reactions in energy storage, pseudo-capacitors offer much higher energy density and specific capacitance compared to double-layer capacitors.

Hybrid Super Capacitors

While double-layer capacitors offer cyclic stability and high power density, their energy density is relatively low. Pseudo-capacitors, on the other hand, have high capacity but lower cyclic stability and energy density. A combination of the two, as seen in hybrid super capacitors, can fulfill higher requirements. Hybrid super capacitors can be categorized into battery-type, composite, and asymmetric capacitors, each with specific electrode configurations.

In Conclusion

Super capacitors have promising applications in smart grids, new energy vehicles, defense, and military sectors. With the rapid development of super capacitor technology, traditional capacitors are gradually being replaced.
Carbon materials are among the most mature and widely used electrode materials for super capacitors.

Considering the working principles of most energy storage devices, electrode materials play a critical role in their development. Therefore, developing high-performance electrode materials with high density, porosity, specific surface area, and volume electrochemical performance is crucial to meeting the requirements of high-energy-density, small-volume commercial super capacitors.
